Our last flight with Kenya Airways was this year in February.
Compared to February we have seen quite a few very positive changes. We just don't know yet, if it is because they have improved the service or because the service on the Paris route might be
different.
A few weeks before the flight, we tried to contact customer service several times before our departure because of different things but they never came back to us. The confirmed the receipt of
the mail and request, wrote back they will get in contact but never came back.
This is quite unsatisfactory as Asante Gold Members as Kenya Airways is lacking to offer proper service here. If they launch a new product as they did, they also need to be on the ball to
offer a proper service.
On the Ground:
As we arrived from Zurich we had around 3 hours in Transit.
Transiting in Paris CDG wasn't a big issue as we arrived from Zurich, we didn't have to go through security again but to pass emigration as we left the Schengen area. As CDG airport is
massive, ways can be very long especially when you have to change terminal.
Once through emigration we made our way to the Air France Business Class Lounge at Terminal 2E, Area K.
Air France as the Skyteam home carrier is the lounge host for all other sky team members.
This Air France Lounge was simply a disappointment and huge letdown.
We think that Air France is triggering who (Airlines and Destinations) is flying from which terminal and offers a respective service.
This lounge has the Flair of a German Railway waiting hall.
Food and beverage is below any long haul business class lounge we have seen. A Disgrace for Air France.
The bar is a huge bar table where on one side they have some wine bottles and on the other side they have some heavier alcohol. There are some coffee machines and a fridge with soft drinks.
The cold buffet with cold cuts and salad is okay and so is the dessert section. At least it looks good.
The hot food already looked disgusting and the taste was like canned food.
This lounge is a place which can simply be skipped and as said it is a diagrace for the homecarrier Air France.
Boarding started a whopping 1 hour and 10 minutes prior departure.
Priority boarding was made and conducted according procedures.
Staff at the gate was just doing their job but otherwise nothing special.
At the aircraft door we were greeted by the senior cabin crew member.
The crew was very friendly at the door and was very present in the cabin whilst boarding.
During
the very long boarding process, welcome drinks, consisting of 4 different choices of drinks including champagne were offered.
The seats were already equipped with headphones, amenity kits and a water bottle.
On every seat there was also a fluffy pillow a nice heavy blanket, a mattress as well as a very thin soft blanket.
Once everyone was on board, the crew distributed the menu cards and shortly after they came to take your order.
Inflight:
The Kenya Airways business class is a very nice and solid business class product. The 787-8 has a total of 30 business class seats in a 2-2-2 configuration in two small cabin sections.
The seats are very comfortable and offer enough privacy and space. Unfortunately they do not have sufficient storage space at all at the seat itself.
You have to stow everything either in the overhead bins or on the middle armrest between the seats.
All business class seats are fully lie flat and you have enough shoulder space as well as legroom space.
The seat worked perfectly fine on this flight.
After take off the cabin crew first came around and distributed some hot towels.
Due to the rather late departure 21:00, there was no Aperitif Service. This was perfect, as everyone just wanted to have a quick bite and then try to get some rest.
After
around 25 minutes into the flight, the cabin crew started with the dinner service.
Compared to our flight in February, there were no more trays for both services.
The crew had to set up everything themselves which brings the service to a much higher level than with a tray.
The main meal consisted of an appetizer, main meal, cheese, fresh fruit and a dessert. They also passed several times with drinks.
You had the possibility to choose a hot meal out of 4 different choices which is a lot.
Continental breakfast consisted of fresh fruits, yoghurt, bread and croissants with butter and preserve and they passed twice with drinks as well.
The presentation of the food as well as the quality was good.
The fish was very tasty and the chicken wasn't dry at all.
The choices Kenya Airways offers will not win a fency award. The products are rather basic, solid but good.
Continental breakfast was super sufficient as per our inner clock, the service started 2:30AM. So there is no big hunger. Quality of the food was good.
The cabin crew on this flight was very good. They were super present in the cabin, super friendly and interacted with the passengers. Completely different than last time.
They were much more attentive. Service was always par on both sides of the cabin. They helped each other and you could see that they worked together as a crew.
Bathrooms were checked throughout the flight and always refilled. They were always clean.
The amenity kit is good and offers the regular content. (socks, toothbrush, eye mask, ear plugs, a cromb as well as a pencil.
As a nice touch and a perfect match for Kenya Airways "the pride of Africa" are the socks with the paw prints of a lion.
The
inflight entertainment is good and the screens worked fine. They have a good size and resolution for business class. The screens are touch screens but you can also choose the handheld devices to
navigate.
Kenya
Airways has a good selection of movies, films and series. Unfortunately they only offer the Films etc in 4 languages.
The
aircraft is not equipped with wifi.
Announcement on this flight were good.
The announcements from the cabin crew were clear and understandable.
Same with the ones from the flight deck.
So now
let's see how the transit procedure works in Nairobi.
Our summary:
A very solid and good business class product. It isn't the newest product anymore and inflight service isn't the most fanciest one but everything was good and solid.
The cabin crew on this flight was awesome and did a phantastic job.
Customer Service needs to be corrected urgently as it is inexistent. If customer service would have worked well, this flight could have been a 5
experience.
We would
reuse Kenya Airways any second again after this flight experience.
