On the Ground:
I checked in online the day before on the Swiss App and I had no bag to be checked.
We arrived 2 hours prior departure at the airport and I was heavily surprised. There was no queue at the security checkpoint at all. It took us less than 5 minutes to get from the curb side
to airside.
Rome Fiumicino "Leonardo da Vinci" airport uses super modern scanners at security where you can leave everything in your bags. This helps heavily for a faster process. Staff was a little
grumpy.
As we had enough time, we visited the Prime Class Lounge with our priority pass. We had an economy ticket for our return flight and as FCO has no Lufthansa Group Lounge we would not be able
to access a lounge with a Frequent Traveler status.
The Prime Class Lounge is also the contracted Swiss Lounge in Rome.
The lounge is rather small and it was completely full. We managed to find a spot and had a drink and some nibbles.
The soft drinks, juices as well as coffee and tea were free of charge. Alcoholic drinks had to be purchased at a manned bar.
The food buffet was very good. They had several hot dishes, a cold buffet, soup and salad. The food was good and fresh.
We arrived 10 minutes prior the indictated boarding time at the gate. They already started to queue the passengers in their respective boarding groups.
The ground staff was friendly and present. The Lufthansa Duty Manager vice versa looked super grumpy.
They did all announcements as by procedures and boarded the plane in the respective groups. Boarding started exactly right on time.
At the aircraft door we were greeted by the maitre de cabine.
The crew was present in the cabin whilst boarding but that was about it.
Inflight:
The Airbus A321 has a 3/3 seating configuration.
We were lucky, that the middle seat remained empty so we had the same space as in business. The legroom and seat comfort was okay for a short haul aircraft. Luckily we were in one of the
first rows in Economy so we had also the same legroom as in Business.
Announcement from the cockpit and cabin crew were good and understandable. Both spoke slowly and clearly.
Service wise, welcome to a low cost airline. Beside the free little bottle of water and the Swiss chocolate you had to buy everything.
Prices on board Swiss with their Saveurs Program are exorbitant high compared to other airlines.
The
cabin crew was on board, that's about it. Nothing out of the ordinary. No smiles, no friendliness, they simply were on board and had to do their work. No passion, no customer interaction no
engagement, nothing. The crew was so unmotivated, the duty-free trolley was simply pushed through without seeing anything and why should they even collect rubbish? People can just stuff the empty
PET bottles and everything else into the seat pocket.
The Swiss Airbus 320 family is equipped with an inflight entertainment system which consists of screens above every third seat row.
On this flight, they only showed the most famous film in Aviation: "the map“ and the Information / Swiss News after take-off.
No WiFi
available on this flight.
Arrival
in Zurich was at a gate position.
As we
had no bags checked in, we can not comment on the baggage delivery in Zurich for this flight.
Summary :
It was a flight low cost style and not even the crew cared.
If I have to fly in Economy on Lufthansa Group nowadays, I would simply choose the cheapest option to get from A to B. Doesn't matter which airline or alliance it is. There is no more
difference and also Loyalty doesn't matter any more.
