Before our flight to Bangkok we had a layover in Helsinki and we decided to try the Hotel Katajanokka, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel.

General Info:
The hotel is located in a historic building of a former Finnish prison. Hotel Katajanokka is Finland’s first Tribute Portfolio Hotel.
The hotel is located within walking distance from the center of Helsinki on the city’s Katajanokka island, which delights with its magnificent Art Nouveau architecture, historical landmarks and industrial buildings of the former harbor.
Hotel Katajanokka, somewhat reminiscent of a medieval castle, has a a total of 106 rooms including suites.
The oldest part of the Katajanokka Hotel dates back to 1837, while the main part dates back to 1888. Until 2002, the building served as the Finnish District and Investigation Prison.
In May 2007, after a major overhaul of the entire building, Hotel Katajanokka opened its doors. And in 2017, the hotel underwent a major refurbishment of the interior.
You can reach the city center easily by foot or with the tram. Which stops directly in front of the hotel.
There is no need for a car if you would like to explore the city.

The hotel in general is in great shape as it was renovated in 2017. It is super stylish, modern and has a great colour concept. They were able to mix the modern hotel vibe with the old prison style.

Check-in:
The check-in was fantastic. We were checked in by the concierge Sami. He did a fantastic job. He was super friendly and chatted with us during the whole process. He explained us the history of the property, where to find what and made us feel comfortable from the first second.
Check-out:
Check-out was great too. The agent interacted with us and asked for feedback about our stay.

Staff at the front desk was always super friendly and helpful and if they had the time also very chatty.

Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Recognition:
During check-in, the agent acknowledged our status, we were upgraded to a junior suite.
We checked in online the day before, which automatically generates the points as a welcome gift. I asked a the front desk to change the welcome gift to the breakfast amenity and that was no issue at all.

There was a small bottle of red wine with some nuts and chocolate awaiting us in our room as welcom amenity.

All in all a very good recognition as Ambassador Elite Member.

Eligible nights and points:
The eligible night as well as the points and revenue was posted 24 hours after our stay. All parameters were posted correctly.
Concierge:
Sami was absolutely phenomenal. He knew the entire story about the hotel and was very helpful. Also the other staff at the front desk were super helpful. The lady in the evening explained us where to go for dinner as the hotel restaurant was closed.
Room / Suite:
The Junior Suite we were upgraded to was absolutely stunning.
The room was big and had a great atmosphere. A huge window which let into the courtyard.
The room is equipped with a fantastic king size bed, a nice couch, and a desk.
The suite itself was super modern, trendy with useful furniture and decoration. The room had a fantastic atmosphere.
The aircondition worked perfectly fine.

The bed itself was heaven! I haven't slept so good in a hotel bed for a long time. The mattress was top, the bedding phenomenal. The duvet were super comfy and fluffy the pillows were amazing. One of the best sleeps in a hotel for a long long time.

WiFi is without login in the entire hotel and it worked perfectly fine. Also the speed was great.

Bathroom:
The bathroom is huge in size and quite modern as well. When you enter the bathroom you have the washbasin right in front of you. On the right, behind an extra door there is the toilet. On the left, there is the shower and as a wowww item our suite was equipped with a full Finnish sauna in the bathroom.
The bathroom is very modern as well and the colours match the room.
The shower was okay, water pressure rather on the low side and unfortunately no door. It is impossible not to but the bathroom under water.
Housekeeping:
The room was cleaned properly and the bed was done astonishing perfect and impeccable. Housekeeping did a great job.
The room was super clean as were the public areas.
F&B outlets/ Lounge:
The bar is integrated into the reception and has a small but cosy seating area next to it.
We did not try the bar as we went outside for dinner.

The hotel would have a restaurant but this one was closed on Sunday as were most restaurants outside.

Breakfast was super good.
The buffet is absolutely great and offers everything. They serve bread, pastry, juices, cereals, hot dishes, cold cuts and cheese and other items. They also have a hot egg station where you can order your egg dishes.
The restaurant is located in the basement, also here the prison theme is omny present.
The quality of the food was really good.

Staff at breakfast was rather grumpy and unfriendly. No smiles, no greeting nothing. They preferred to chat under each other.

Executive Lounge:
No Lounge
Pool / Spa / Gym:
The hotel has a very small gym in the basement and next to it is a Finnish sauna.
Social Media:
Social media seems to be rather unknown to this property. They do post and repost some things on Instagram and Facebook but very irregular and no interaction at all with their followers.
Summary:
All in all a great stay at the Hotel Katajanokka Helsinki.
Nice, modern and comfortable rooms, great breakfast and great front desk staff.
We will definitely come back for a long weekend in Helsinki and so we can definitely recommend this property.
