After 20 years I was finally back at the Kruger National Park.
As it was a national holiday in South Africa (Heritage Day) during our travel, the only camp with availability online on the San-Parks website was the Berg en Dal Rest Camp.

Berg en Dal is located on the lower western part of the Kruger National Park. The closest Gate to enter the Kruger and getting to Berg en Dal is the Malelane Gate around 50 minutes away from Nelspruit /Mbombela.

Berg en Dal Rest Camp was opened in 1984 and is one of the "newer" camps in Kruger.
Well it maybe was once newer. The buildings haven't been renovated since, except for the restaurant. More Infos on that later.
Berg en Dal offers different accommodation options such as huts and camping.
The buildings in Berg en Dal are set within natural bush and the gardens planted with flowering shrubs and aloes, leaving much of the natural habitat unchanged within the camp.
We had a 3 bed chalet (Nr. 79) right at the fence of the camp and had incredible sightings from our terrace.
The chalet offers a double bed and a single bed, a kitchenette with all necessary appliances (toaster, water boiler, microwave etc.) a bar with 3 bar chairs, a nice bathroom with toilet and shower and an amazing outside terrace with Braai (BBQ) possibility and a table and chairs.
The room itself was okay but many of the appliances need a very urgent makeover or need to be fixed.
The stove in the kitchen is from 1984. It needed 45 minutes to get a pan of water (for pasta) boiling.
The fridge doesn't work at all. It is maybe 5 degrees cooler than the outside temperature and the freezer gets the temperature of the fridge. So we had to put everything in the freezer. Careful when you bring fresh meat or dairy products and put them in the fridge.
Each unit would be equipped with an Aircondition. Ours didn't work at all and was just functioning as a fan. With 37°C outside temperature a working AC would have been nice.
The bathroom was super okay and the shower was top. I have never ever seen a shower with that much water pressure. A full massage was included 😉
Vice versa, knowing where we are, that would be a huge water resource saving if they would put a pressure regulator in.
The restaurant is at the main area of the camp and so is the shop.
The restaurant was newly renovated and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We went twice for dinner. The first night, the staff was suuuuper unfriendly and unprofessional. The second tune was much better.
The food was okay but nothing to write home about.

The shop is perfect. It offers souvenirs and curio articles as well as a big selection of groceries when you would like to cook yourself. This includes fresh meat, dairy products as well as vegetables and fruits.

The camp has also a big pool if you would like to relax or go for a swim.

And now a few words to the Kruger National Park. If you are a first time safari traveler the camp and park is okay. If you are a safari enthusiast like we are, you are at the wrong place. The park can get super super crowded. We tried to take as many roads where no one was driving to escape the hassle and sometimes even the traffic jam.
We had some amazing sightings but there are definitely better, more quiet places to go on a self drive safari.
All in all the camp was ok. Many things in Berg en Dal need some urgent fix or attention. The good thing it was also one of the smaller camps.
We can recommend the camp but wouldn't stay that long anymore.
