Paul‘s 159th Camp Review for the
Hluhluwe - Imfolozi Game Reserve
Details:
Duration of stay: 9 nights / self-drive Safari
Food & Beverage: N/A - Self Catering Camp
I'm coming to the Mpila Camp for around 20 years.
The camp is located on the Imfolozi side of the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve which again is the oldest National Park in Africa and located around 3 hours north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.
This camp would have such great potential but is currently a lame duck as the government isnt bringing this amazing camp ahead.
The camp is not fenced, which means that animals can come in at any time.
Electricity is only provided from 5AM until 22PM with a generator.
There is no WiFi at the camp and mobile connection is very difficult.
It is the perfect spot to unwind and relax.
The Mpila Camp has 2 Bed Safari Tents, 2 Bed Chalets, 4 Bed Safari Tent, 5 bed Chalets and 7 Bed Chalets.
All accommodation options are self catering only and the Chalets and Tents are fully equipped and you only need to bring your food and drinks.
The infrastructure is on the very basic side but you will have the full African Safari experience.
For our stay we did choose the 2 bed Chalet. The Chalets are fully equipped with a kitchenette, a real cooking stove, a big fridge, double bed and wardrobe as well as a big toilet with
shower.
The Chalet has been softly renovated last year with new fridges, new cupboards as well as a new shower floor. The renovation was overdue and the Chalets look much better now.
Each unit has a huge outdoor deck and a Braai (BBQ) area.
The beds are very comfortable. The pillows could be of a better quality but all in all we had some good nights sleep.
The hot water is generated by a gas heater and the water pressure is simply amazing for the area you are considering yourself.
Housekeeping does an amazing job and is cleaning the unit every single day.
Staff at frontdesk is nice and helpful but again you can feel the gouvernmental touch as everything is done on a minimum level and without passion.
As said, the government as owner does not care about the camp. They could do so much more and better to attract more customers.
They would do good to implement some sort of restaurant or bistro in the camp for those customers who do not want to self cater.
This camp and the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is my heaven on earth place. You have the safari experience from the first second.
I would definitely recommend this place.
The Camp is the perfect base for your self driving safari in this big5 National Park.
